Response to Tallaght attack

As Methodists, we are appalled by the vicious attack on a man in Tallaght on Saturday night.

The details of how the man was stripped, bloodily beaten and robbed are barbaric. Such actions have no place in our society. We pray for his full healing and peace.

It seems that that this man was attacked on the basis of his race, vicious and empty rumour and brutal thuggery. It follows patterns related to other incidents where rumours are spread online, stoking hatred and emboldening some to act with violence or other expressions of hatred.

As Methodists we are committed to countering fear and hatred by our words and actions, wholeheartedly loving our neighbour. We call on all in society, particularly those with influence, to take responsibility for their language and actions, in person and online.

Issued on behalf of the Methodist Church in Ireland:

Rev Andrew Kingston
Superintendent Minister, Tallaght Methodist Church

Rev Steven Foster
Southern Chairperson, Council on Social Responsibility
