MCI Statement on cancellation of India Day Celebrations

On this India Independence Day, we feel compelled to highlight our horror at the various recent attacks on members of the Indian Community.

We are also saddened by the concerted and ongoing threats, misinformation and racial abuse online towards Indian people in Ireland. It must end. The decision to cancel this weekend's annual 'India Day' celebrations is significant and should cause us as a society to reflect. All in our society must be able to live and work in peace and be free from fear and prejudice.

As Methodists we underline again that we recognise all people as reflecting the image of God and we treat everyone with the resulting respect and dignity. We call on all in society to stand up against racist language or actions in whatever subtle or overt ways they are expressed. Those who would express careless prejudice or hatred need to know it's not acceptable. And as Methodists - as followers of Jesus - we are looking for ways to bless all our neighbours.
