MEET 2026: The Gambia

Visiting Christians in other countries is the best way to understand mission in their context, to find ways that we might support them in that ministry, and to consider how their approach might be relevant to our mission here in Ireland.

That’s the logic behind “MEET” (Methodist – Experience – Exchange – Tell) visits. These visits are not designed to parachute a group of Westerners into a foreign environment just so that they can paint a wall, take some pictures, and come home feeling good about themselves. Instead, they offer an opportunity to build relationships with Christians in another country, learning from each other and finding ways to support mission around the world.

Between 24th October and 3rd November, a MEET team from Ireland will be visiting The Gambia, a small country in West Africa. Christians are a tiny minority in The Gambia, with Muslims making up around 95% of the population. Despite their small numbers, Gambian Methodists have a long and valued witness, rooted in worship, education, healthcare and community development.

During the visit, the MEET team will have the chance to witness how the Gambian church is growing, and how clinics, schools and agricultural projects all contribute to mission. The group will also have the chance to share in worship, Bible study, and outreach with our Gambian brothers and sisters.

That’s the plan, at least! But like all aspects of WMP’s work, this visit will be reliant on God’s guidance, protection, and support. Please join us in praying for this visit, and for those taking part.

In addition to your prayers, you can also support the visit financially. Contributions from team members have already covered the majority of the costs (travel, accommodation, meals etc), but your donations will help with the remaining total to ensure that the team aren't a financial burden on their hosts. After these costs have been covered, any extra funds will be given as a gift to the Methodist Church The Gambia to support their ministry.
