Faith & Forgiveness in Rwanda

Bishop Samuel Kayinamura, who leads EMLR, is a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Bishop Samuel’s parents were sadly among the estimated one million killed during the 100 day ordeal that devastated the country. He was forced to leave his home, fleeing to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for safety.

Eventually Bishop Samuel returned to his village, but he was full of hate. During the genocide neighbours had turned on neighbours, anyone opposed to the genocide was killed.

While studying in seminary a while later he was challenged by the words of the Lords Prayer. He made the journey back to his village, forgiving his neighbours for the devastation and pain they had caused. This act of forgiveness left him feeling set free. Bishop Samuel describes forgiveness as a key for someone who is in prison by which they can open their cell and be free - but no one else will do it for them, only they can use the key.

Please pray for the ongoing reconciliation work after the genocide, especially for those who are welcoming back former neighbours and taking steps to forgive and move forward.

Fixed on their mission and vision for the future of the church in Rwanda, the church is taking on the challenges in their path. New government requirements mean that without proper church buildings and certain training for Pastors, churches are closed, with 77% of the churches being closed so far.
