HEALTHCARE

FACT

Ghanaian life expectancy is only 66 years

The hospital is located in Wenchi town, in the middle-belt of Ghana. It serves over 100,000 people directly and as a referral centre for 19 health centres.

There is a long history between the hospital and Irish Methodism. Over more recent years, WDR has provided support for the maternity wing, a new orthopaedic theatre, new staff accommodation (to attract and retain staff) and the five-year training of an orthopaedic surgeon. Alex guides the hospital as it continues to expand its range of expertise and services.

Currently, WDR is part-funding the extension of accommodation to be used by doctors. This extension is at the insistence of the Ministry of Health. WDR has also provided funds for the hospital chaplain’s ‘poor fund’. This is for patients who do not have medical insurance and cannot afford their treatment fees. The hospital is committed to treating everyone in need.

“My son had a high temperature. They ran tests and told me the good news that he hasn’t got malaria. I am so glad for the Methodist Hospital. It is a very important part of the community.”
