2025/26 MAIN Grant: £4,000 (€4,600) - water access and sanitation in rural villages
FACT
Less than 20% of rural Ghanaians can access safe water
Methodist Relief is a wing of Methodist Church Ghana, whose key priorities include clean water access and livelihoods. Over many years, WDR has worked alongside Methodist Relief for many years in a variety of programmes: woodlot (growing trees for profit), rainwater collection, crop diversification, bee keeping, literacy and numeracy and clean water and sanitation.
WDR is currently funding a WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) scheme in two communities, Memordzi and Sikor, on the River Volta. Both were affected by flooding from the Akosombo Dam spillage in 2023. This, and other factors, resulted in their only water sources being untreated and unsafe. Waterborne diseases were prevalent and women and children had to walk long distances and spend extended periods fetching water. This impacts education and agricultural productivity.
Both are receiving a borehole, a filtration system to treat water from the river and training of WASH Committees to maintain and sustain the water supply systems.
Approximately 930 adults and children will benefit.
“I had been unemployed for two years but now I’m planning to become a full-time farmer. I’m grateful to Methodist Relief and WDR for the woodlot project. The project will decrease my costs and increase my income.”
