LEGO Church at Clooney Hall
North western district
On the first Sunday of the month, in Clooney Hall Methodist, church takes on a different look as ‘LEGO Church’.
Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon, a congregation gather in the church hall. Each session begins with free time to search through the ‘Brick Pit’ and build creations using LEGO while engaging in conversation with fellow builders. Tea and coffee are always available.
During the session, a Bible story is read, often accompanied by images of the story recreated in LEGO bricks. After hearing the story, everyone is invited to create something out of LEGO in response. Alongside this activity, there is an opportunity for discussion around provided questions, allowing individuals to share their creations and explain their significance.
LEGO Church has a lot in common with a typical Sunday service, incorporating Bible reflection, singing together, and community-building. However, there are obviously some notable differences that make it unique.
Accessibility is a key aspect of LEGO Church, ensuring a low barrier for participation. While LEGO is often associated with children, it is being enjoyed by people from a whole range of ages in the congregation, from young children to older members in their retirement years.
Additionally, this type of hands-on activity is particularly accessible to individuals who are neurodiverse or have additional needs. It provides a church experience where everyone can feel fully involved, when more traditional service formats may present challenges.
Rather than simply listening to someone else speak, it has provided an opportunity for everyone to use the creative gifts God has given them to engage with and respond to the story; and of course, it’s lots of fun!
LEGO Church has been running for approximately six months now and is continuing to grow, with more than 20 families signed up to take part.
