MCI Statement on the Bonfire in Moygashel
The Methodist Church in Ireland welcomes and embraces people from many different cultural backgrounds. These cultures are celebrated in various ways, including for some, bonfires marking the arrival on William of Orange, who came to these shores by boat.
Sadly, on a few occasions, these events are used to display sectarian or racial hatred. The display of a boat with effigies of human beings which has appeared on the bonfire in Moygashel is deeply offensive. We call on those responsible for this bonfire to remove the boat before the fire is lit.
We hope and pray that all involved in various cultural celebrations over this weekend will do so enjoyably and safely, and avoid giving any offence to neighbours or visitors, from wherever they may come.
