Local Preacher Series - Colin Burrows
In the sixth of our Local Preacher series, meet Colin Burrows a member of Christ Church Primacy, part of the Bangor and Holywood Circuit. He is in his second year of the Methodist Local Preachers Course.
“Christ Church Primacy (shared with the Church of Ireland congregation) has just celebrated its 40th anniversary. I am one of the founder members. Over the years I have served in many posts including several periods as Society and Circuit Steward. I was often at the front of the church, welcoming speakers, reading and assisting with services or providing updates on events. However, ‘preaching’ was not something that I either felt called to or had a burning desire to do. Then, during Covid, I twice had a short notice call from the Minister: - ‘Colin I have just tested positive’ - could I step in as there was no one else available? That was the start of a journey, and I was encouraged by members of the congregation to consider applying for the Local Preachers course.
Following conversations with the Minister and Circuit Superintendent, things started to move fast. The application process helped affirm that this was something I felt called to test. I am now in my second year and am loving the learning that is taking place, I am reading the Bible and commentaries in a new way. While I am looking forward to completing the course later this year, I will miss the weekly study and meet ups with other students.
Each unit of the course has provided me with new insights into the depth of scripture and the historical figures (from the desert fathers to modern time), who have shaped our understanding of faith and belief. The ‘Reading the New Testament’ unit helped enormously with the way in which I now approach sermon preparation. The ‘Christian Theology’ unit has provided deeper insights and caused me to rethink some of the basic tenets of my faith.
Since starting the course, our two congregations at Primacy have come together to become one worshipping congregation. We have also been joined by others from Methodists Churches in Bangor that have recently closed. We are moving to become a Covenant Church and together with Sharon Little, who is also training to be a Local Preacher, I am part of the team working with Rev Philip Corrigan (Circuit Superintendent), Denise Wilson (Church of Ireland Pastor), Church of Ireland Readers and Methodist Local Preachers.
The opportunity to share the good news of the Gospel in this joint setting is exciting.”
