Pray for Venezuela

Venezuela, once vibrant with potential, has watched its hopes fade under a corrupt government that silences opposing voices and persecutes those who dream of change.

Christians have not been immune to the impact of diminished hope and government corruption in recent years. Aid is often a bribe in disguise - in exchange for political support, churches are protected or financially rewarded. Those who stand firm in their faith are oppressed, those who speak out are threatened and those who seek justice are silenced. Often, simply providing care for the most vulnerable in society is seen as opposition to government aims.

On January 3rd, U.S. forces carried out major strikes on military bases, communications towers and infrastructure in the capital city, Caracas. President Donald Trump announced the capture and removal of Venezuela’s President, Nicolás Maduro and his wife. However, Maduro’s government is still in charge, led by his former vice-president, Delcy Rodríguez.

Thankfully, Comunidad Cristiana Metodista de Venezuela, CCMV (the Methodist Christian Community of Venezuela), was not impacted directly by the air strikes. However, the U.S. military intervention and local government response has exacerbated the atmosphere of fear and tension throughout the country.

Under Maduro’s rule, millions had already left the country due to the unstable economy, political repression, gang violence and food shortages. Over a month after his capture the situation in Venezuela remains precarious. Communities are experiencing frequent blackouts as there is not enough fuel to generate electricity. Basic foods and baby formula aren’t available, and health services are suffering; medicines are in short supply and surgeries are being impacted by power outages.

Despite the worries and dangers of an uncertain future, the church continues to believe in hope and a better future for all in Venezuela. Revd Glen Mendoza, treasurer of the Methodist Christian Community of Venezuela said, “For now we are living under a tense calm, in prayer and with hope in Christ.”

Please join us in praying for our Christian brothers and sisters in Venezuela and for those impacted by recent events.
