Firm Foundations: Building together in Ghana
In August 2023, WMP Committee Member, Judith Weir visited Ghana. Hosted by Rev Kenneth Arthur-Sarfo and his driver Elvis Opoku, Judith and Pat Jamison visited Methodist Churches, met with school children and spent time with local communities. After a lunch together they had the opportunity to visit Elvis’ family home place, Duampompo...
“Duampompo is a small rural village situated around an hour south of Kumasi, just off the main Accra Road. If you keep an eye out on the roadside for stalls selling the most delicious oranges, you have arrived. We were warmly greeted by a small group of leaders at the church, before being shown a small ‘minister’s’ room where the Sunday school took place. It was immediately obvious they needed more space - the room was packed full, with more children outside looking in, eager to learn about God.
Over the past two and a half years, prayer and fundraising have made this project possible. The foundations were laid in June 2024 by a trusted team from Accra selected by Elvis, alongside a group of local people. In May 2025, the team returned with determination to raise the walls. Four months later, there was a service of thanksgiving and the laying of the foundation stone - an all-day celebration! We had much to be thankful for, God’s plan and provision was clear at each step.
Then came our biggest challenge yet – completing the roof. Purchasing the wood for the structure and the metal sheets was our biggest financial challenge of the project. We prayed. God provided.
The latest pictures show a usable building, with doors in place and windows sitting to the side to be fitted. What was once overgrown and incomplete is now full of children joyfully worshipping God. It has been a blessing to work alongside Elvis and the Methodist people of Duampompo on a project that will assist their mission. It is a joy knowing that the building which now facilitates youth and children’s meetings will continue to do so for decades to come.
As Pat and I have talked with groups, taken services and shared about this project with family, friends and colleagues we have been overwhelmed by their interest and generosity. It has been a lesson in relying on the faithfulness of God for both ourselves in Ireland and the church in Ghana. This building stands not only as bricks and mortar, but as a testimony to what God can do when His people work together.”
