About us
WDR has over 50 years of experience
Through World Development & Relief, the Methodist Church in Ireland is actively tackling global poverty.
Our Christian faith demands this.
We choose to work through indigenous partner organisations rooted in their communities, because they understand their context best. We welcome anyone who shares this vision of a better world to join with us; people of all faiths and none.
Our vision
That every person’s God-given potential will be fulfilled
Our values
Faith, justice, compassion, equality and solidarity
Our logo
We walk in solidarity with others in the world. The lead footprint is that of our expert partners. Our journey together is long-term to bring lasting change.
Our view of partnership
what we do & how we do it
WHAT WE DO
We currently work with 13 indigenous partners in 10 countries. They cover a range of themes such as water and sanitation, farming, education, healthcare and rights. Many of our partners are impacted by climate change and so their work also helps local people adapt. Programmes often target the most marginalised including women, those with a disability and children.
We support long-term community development, service provision (e.g. water access) and emergency relief.
We endeavour to do work that is:
Long-term and sustainable
Driven by and empowering for local people
Transforming for whole communities
Tackling the root causes of poverty & injustice
Innovative when necessary
HOW WE DO IT
Our relational approach to partnerships is shaped by our Christian values. These relationships are built upon trust, transparency, accountability and friendship. Our partners:
Share our values
Exhibit exemplary leadership
Show evidence of expertise and a track record of success
Are indigenous organisations rooted in their communities
Are committed to relational partnership
Work is monitored with our partners through six-monthly reports, regular digital communications and occasional visits.
Our income
The Methodist Church in Ireland directs its members to give 1% of their income (post-tax) to support their WDR partners. For the average supporter, this would be approximately £20/€25 per month.
Sources of income include annual church services, individual donations, legacies and fundraising events such as the Step Up sponsored events and the Gifts for Life Christmas catalogue.
