We partner with Kopila-Nepal in their fight to achieve equality in society for single-women, widows and people from lower caste communities.

We also partner with King George VI School and Rehabilitation Centre as they provide education as well as physiotherapy, speech therapy and vocational training for their learners, 75% of whom live with a disability. KGVI believe all children should have equal access to education and opportunities, regardless of their abilities.

In order to create a better world for everyone, all people must have equal opportunities for personal and economic development, regardless of gender, ethnicity or disability.

In Nepali, 'Kopila' translates as 'flower bud'; something that needs cared for and nurtured, in order that it might blossom and grow.

Kopila-Nepal is based in the city of Pokhara but also works in rural areas. Staff make regular visits to these communities. In rainy season, public transport is unreliable and so, staff walk for many hours.

Speaking about Kopila-Nepal, Suhadra, a member of one of their Self-Help groups, says, "Kopila is doing a good job, even in the most difficult times they support us and that means it is support for our children too."

Women in Kopila's Self-Help groups can borrow loans from the group savings to start income generation projects such as beekeeping.

Kopila-Nepal staff regularly visit Siwani's school, ensuring children are educated on issues of equality & gender based violence. Siwani says, "I want to be a judge when I'm older. I know I will have to work hard!"

Maili lives in one of Kopila-Nepal's Safe Homes. The women grow their own vegetables and look after goats, chickens and buffalo.

Lindelwe has cerebral palsy and has very little control over her arms. Her physiotherapists at KGVI help her develop skills so that she can live with some independence. She is learning to colour in using her feet.

“When I was growing up here in Nepal, my parents always worried about me; they worried where I was and when I would come home. I realised that society was unfair for girls and that’s why my parents were concerned.

I don’t want a society where girls aren’t safe. I came to Kopila because they fight for women’s dignity and rights.

I would like to thank WDR for their generous support for our work with marginalised women… We have so much more to do to bring rights to the fore and keep making the world better and safer for everyone.
