On hearing of the untimely death of James Brokenshire MP, former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rev. David Clements, Convener of the Council on Social Responsibility, issued the following Statement on behalf of the Methodist Church in Ireland:

"In my dealings with James Brokenshire, I always found him calm and thoughtful, a man who always seemed to listen to those he was engaging with"
Dr.Clements recalls that at the conclusion of one of those meetings the then President of the Methodist Church in Ireland asked the Secretary of State
if he could pray for him and his team. What struck Dr.Clements was James Brokenshire's sincere appreciation of the gesture. His parting comment as
the Methodist delegation left the meeting was "please continue to pray for us"

At this sad time, we remember in our prayers James’ widow Cathy their family and his colleagues.
