How to hear God, a guide for Young Explorers by Pete Greig Book Review

‘You were born with a super-power!  You have an incredible supernatural ability to hear the actual voice of God!’ (pgs2-3). These exciting lines on the opening pages of Pete Greig’s newest book set the tone for the whole book, capturing not just how exciting it is to communicate with God, but the fact that we can all do it.

Tackling topics like ‘Hearing God in the Bible’, ‘Hearing God in Prayer’, ‘Hearing God in Community, Creation and Culture’ and more, this book seeks to offer practical advice and encouragement steeped in Biblical truths.  Using a fun variety of fonts and graphics, there are reflective activities, practical activities, pages to write notes, fascinating facts, helpful tips, and prayer ideas; all designed to help young disciples grow to recognise God’s voice and communicate with Him.

There are real stories from children, stories of famous Christians, and stories from Pete himself to portray the variety of ways in which God can speak to us, how we can respond to His voice, and how we can pass on His message to others.

Pitched at ages 8-12, the book is suitable for children to read through themselves, although it might be helpful for a trusted adult to read the book either in advance or alongside the child, as further discussion would be beneficial for specific topics.  In particular, the chapters on ‘Hearing God in Prophecy’ and ‘Hearing God in Dreams, Angels and Conscience’, which may be very natural for some children but need further explanation for others. This is a lovely, practical book which serves as a reminder to all ages that God communicates with us.  Are we ready to listen?

‘Sometimes He speaks dramatically, but mostly He speaks quietly with “words … full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63).’ (p 198).
