Statement on concern about recent incidents relating to those seeking refuge

The Methodist Church in Ireland (through the Council on Social Responsibility) is very concerned about events in recent days in Clare and Dublin related to the housing of International Protection applicants.

The destruction and burning of tents, belongings and documents last weekend of those who were camped out in Upper Sandwith St. in Dublin 2 was utterly wrong. Those targeted are vulnerable due to their circumstances that have led them here. The lack of accommodation made them even more vulnerable, so to be targeted in this way is deeply unjust.

We are concerned about the blockade in the roads around Magowna House in County Clare. As has been the case too often elsewhere before, we are concerned about the limited communication between local residents, local political representatives and Government departments. We urge good communication with all concerned.

Primarily we are concerned that all in our society, particularly the most vulnerable, whatever their circumstances, are shown dignity and compassion.

We refer to our previous statements* about our deep concern about the rise in racist language and actions. We underline our call to all to recognise that the present challenges are a housing crisis for all. The inadequacy and lack of urgency of housing policy has also left us scrambling to meet our international humanitarian obligations. Vulnerable people seeking Asylum here should never be blamed.

We recognise the hard work of many in Government departments recently but also urge a unified approach by departments as well Government and Opposition parties to deal with this crisis and its potential to stir racial tensions.

As Methodists, we again recommit to playing our part in working for the good of society by our practical support for those in need, facilitating good understanding and relationships and speaking with courageous compassion.
